South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has won an order from compatriot Cido Shipping for two 88,000 LPG dual fuel capable very large ammonia carriers (VLACs). The units, costing $125.9m each, are due for delivery in Q2 and Q3 2027.

The ordering of more than 50 VLACs over the past 12 months has made many headlines around the world.

Whilst these orders suggest a market surge in the direction of ammonia, a deeper analysis shows that most will be initially deployed as LPG carriers.
