The agrarian Centre Party has moved to leave the Norwegian government after a political showdown over the adoption of EU energy laws from the last decade, local media reported on Thursday.

After weeks of government infighting, the eurosceptic Centre Party will leave the Norwegian coalition government with the centre-left Labour Party.

Going into a parliamentary meeting to formalise the move, Centre Party leader Marit Arnstadt told public broadcaster NRK that the decision “is about political matters, and we do not want to align ourselves more closely with the EU’s energy policy”.

Norway is bound to adopt EU energy laws as a member of the European Economic Area.

In a bid to keep in the EU’s good books, the Labour Party pushed for the adoption of 2019 EU energy efficiency and renewables laws, which the Centre Party resisted, as Euractiv reported.

The Norwegian Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, is due to give a press conference at 3pm Brussels time.
